Carbon Footprinting

Carbon Footprinting

As a nation we have been set with the target to reduce and minimise our global impact by slowing down and reverting our carbon emissions to become carbon neutral by 2050. Several government policies are already in place such as MEES, ESOS, SECR and others aimed at reducing the carbon emissions of properties and businesses.

Our Energy and Carbon Assessors are fully qualified and have extensive experience in the new-built and existing portfolio sectors.

Regarding carbon emissions, your business and building needs to be carbon neutral by 2050. Operating nationally, our qualified Energy Assessors, Low Carbon Consultants and ESOS Assessors can assist you with this transition.

Take a look at the steps below we consider are vital going forward:

We conduct site surveys to establish your total energy and carbon emissions. We can conduct this service annually to demonstrate and safeguard your own in-house objectives towards net zero emissions and a reduction in overheads. We recommend the best option to help reduce energy is through a Display Energy Certificates; this document will increase staff’s awareness of the buildings energy consumption and drive behavioural change to benefit of your organisation.

After obtaining a good understanding of your local needs, energy consumptions and related emissions, we will be able to assist you in setting step by step targets on how to reduce your energy consumption. Bearing in mind that you have thirty years, it is vital now to control your emissions and get the hang of your consumptions. Big leading companies have already published their targets to become carbon neutral by 2030 and 2040, which is way ahead of the governmental targets. Consumer orientations are already shifting to companies who are offering more sustainable products and who have a ‘greener toe’ than others.

Reducing your carbon emissions does not only reduce the energy you consume, but it also means you pay less for your energy. Buying less energy means as a business you have more capital to invest in your products, produce, people and assets.

It is a mistaken belief that you should offset your carbon emissions after you have done your energy improvements. Once we have established your carbon footprint, we know how much CO2(e) your business releases into the environment. This can be ‘off-setted’ nationwide and even better by investing your carbon-offsets in global projects. Remember, your emissions have a global impact, so reduce locally, act globally gets a new meaning.

There are many ways to reduce your carbon footprint, which include:

  • Using renewable energies such as PV, solar hot-water, wind, tidal, PV and battery storage, ground water and air-source heat-pumps
  • Better insulations for your buildings
  • Air-tightness testing
  • Alternative heating systems
  • Renovate do not replace, as the embodied carbon in new buildings can be higher than renovating already existing buildings
  • Alternative transportation such as cycle to work, work from home, using electric vehicles such as EV cars and EV motorbikes
  • Switch your energy providers to “Zero Carbon” providers
  • Replace your HVAC with zero carbon alternatives such as PV, onsite battery storage and an air-source-heat-pumps
  • Step away from fossil fuels

Over the recent years the term ‘global climate crisis’ and global warming has been flooding social media and is still raising awareness by doing so. We like to use the term of a global climate change as the effects of our greenhouse gas emissions are being felt worldwide. Nations including the UK have set their targets to be ‘zero carbon’ by 2050 to try to tackle worse climate conditions for future generations.

Already today we can feel and see the devasting impacts the rise of global temperature can have locally. NASA stated that since the industrial revolutions started over a decade ago that the global average temperature has risen little less than 1C. On the other hand, the oceans have risen by more than 15cm which is impacted by two main facts of the water molecules expanding due to the higher temperature; and secondly higher localised temperatures causes glaciers and ice sheets to melt.

Not only is Venice sinking slightly and is a tourist attraction because of its romantic canals, it is hit by floods up-to 100 times a year mainly due to global warming and rising sea levels. It is estimated that alone in the past decade the Atlantic Ocean has had ten times more hurricanes than compared to previous decades.

Scientists and leading public bodies are urging governments and companies to act now with a swift and immediate action stated by Prince Charles. In his message the Prince of Wales stated: ‘Without a swift and immediate action, at an unprecedented pace and scale, we will miss the window of opportunity to reset for a more sustainable and inclusive future’.
